Sedan vs SUV Fuel Cost in Dubai (2026): The Real Monthly Difference
At October 2026 prices (Special 95 at AED 4.28 a litre), a typical compact sedan costs about AED 400 to 700 a month to fuel in Dubai, while a mid-size V6 SUV costs about AED 770 to 1,280 and a large V8 SUV about AED 1,000 to 1,650, depending on whether you drive 1,500 or 2,500 km a month. The SUV premium is roughly AED 4,000 to 12,000 a year.
Work out your own fuel cost in 30 seconds
Monthly fuel cost = kilometres per month x litres per 100 km / 100 x price per litre. Example: 2,000 km x 7 L/100 km / 100 = 140 litres, and 140 x AED 4.28 = AED 599 a month.
Typical monthly cost at 1,500 km and 2,500 km
- Compact sedan (6 to 6.5 L/100 km): AED 385 to 420 at 1,500 km, AED 640 to 700 at 2,500 km
- Mid-size sedan like a Camry or Jetta (7.5 L/100 km): AED 482 or AED 802
- Compact SUV (8.5 L/100 km): AED 546 or AED 910
- Mid-size V6 SUV (12 L/100 km): AED 770 or AED 1,284
- Large V8 SUV (15.5 L/100 km): AED 995 or AED 1,658
Fuel is only part of the SUV premium
Bigger SUVs usually also cost more in tyres, brakes and insurance. On the other hand, they hold value well in the UAE and are genuinely useful for large families and desert trips. The right answer depends on how many seats you actually use and how far you drive.
A sensible middle ground
- Compact SUVs with 4-cylinder engines (Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Audi Q3)
- Hybrid SUVs where budget allows
- A large sedan like a Camry or Accord if you need space but not height
