Leaving the UAE? How to Sell Your Car Before You Fly (Checklist)
To sell your car before leaving the UAE, start two to three weeks before your flight: clear traffic fines, settle or let the buyer settle any car loan, get a valuation, and sell to a buyer who pays in full on the spot and completes the RTA transfer the same day. Do it before your visa is cancelled, because the car must be transferred out of your name while your Emirates ID is still valid. Carology buys cars from departing expats every week and pays in full before you leave.
The timeline that works
- 3 weeks before: get a valuation so you know what the car is worth
- 2 weeks before: pay any traffic fines and check Salik and parking balances
- 10 days before: decide whether to sell outright or consign for a higher price
- 1 week before: sell and complete the RTA transfer while your visa and Emirates ID are active
- After the sale: cancel your car insurance and Salik account, and keep the transfer receipt
Do it before your visa is cancelled
The RTA transfer needs the seller's valid Emirates ID. Once your residence visa is cancelled, selling becomes harder and slower. Sell first, cancel the visa after.
Still paying a car loan?
You can still sell. The buyer settles the outstanding amount with your bank, the bank releases the mortgage on the car, and you receive the difference. Carology handles the bank clearance letter and the release as part of the sale.
Get paid before you go
When you sell to Carology you are paid in full before you leave, by bank transfer or manager's cheque. The price we agree is the price you get, with no last-minute haggling and no "we'll transfer it next week".
If you are short on time, we can also collect the car and complete the paperwork for you, so your last week is spent packing, not queueing at the RTA.
