Selling a Car in Dubai: The Full Process Step by Step (2026)
To sell a car in Dubai you need the owner's Emirates ID, the mulkiya and all keys. Fines must be cleared and any car loan settled before the RTA will transfer ownership. A private sale then needs both parties at an RTA-approved centre or on the RTA app to complete the transfer. Selling to a dealer like Carology removes most of these steps: the dealer settles fines and loans from the price, pays you and completes the transfer, usually in under an hour.
Step 1: Decide how you want to sell
There are three realistic routes in Dubai. A private sale through classifieds usually gets the highest headline price but takes weeks and puts the paperwork, test drives and payment risk on you. An online car buying platform is faster but often reduces its offer after inspection. A dealer is the quickest and simplest, and some dealers, Carology included, also offer consignment, where they sell the car to retail buyers for you to get closer to the private price.
Step 2: Find out what your car is worth
Look at what the same model, year and mileage actually sells for, not just what sellers are asking. Listing prices on classifieds sites are hopes, not results. Get one or two dealer valuations to anchor your expectations. GCC spec, a full service history, no accident record and a clean interior all push the price up.
Step 3: Gather your documents
- Original Emirates ID of the registered owner
- Mulkiya (vehicle registration card)
- All keys and the service book
- If financed: the bank's liability letter, then the clearance letter after payoff
- If company owned: trade licence copy and authorisation letter
- If someone else is selling for you: a notarised power of attorney
Step 4: Clear fines and the car loan
The RTA blocks a transfer while there are unpaid fines on the car, so check them on the RTA or Dubai Police app. If there is a loan, the bank holds a mortgage on the car with the RTA. You must pay off the loan, get a clearance letter, and have the mortgage released before the car can change hands. When you sell to a dealer, the dealer can pay the bank directly and give you the difference.
Step 5: Agree the price and get paid safely
Never hand over keys or sign the transfer before the money is confirmed in your account. Manager's cheques and bank transfers are safest. Be careful with buyers who offer to pay later, ask you to transfer first, or send screenshots of payments instead of real transfers. These are the most common private sale scams in the UAE.
Step 6: Transfer ownership with the RTA
For a private sale, the buyer needs valid insurance and the car usually needs to pass the RTA test before it can be registered in their name. Both of you complete the transfer at a testing centre or through the RTA app, and the buyer pays the transfer fees. Once it is done, cancel your insurance and ask your insurer about a refund for the unused months.
